First off, I want to explain the photos which will be further talked about later. Alexis thought it would be super fun to get up in the middle of the night for about a week and a half straight and “mix her ingredients”. That’s cool that you want to be a scientist kid, but I can’t tell you how much money I’ve tossed in the trash and this isn’t even all of it…
Now, let’s get to it.
To The Parents With A Strong-Willed Child: It’s Okay to Lose Your Shit!
A few days ago, I was told that every kid is strong-willed.
Uhm… Excuse me? Come again? Are you CRAZY!
Your 4/5 tantrums and arguments per week are a breeze compared to arguing with a strong-willed child 500 times per hour because they MUST do something that you are telling them not to.
Definitely not trying to make it sound like we have it worse because every mom has it difficult. It’s not easy rasing another tiny human. However, I definitely don’t know if I would wish for anyone to have a super strong-willed child.
This week has been filled with “NO! Don’t do that.” “Don’t climb up there” “Stop unlocking that door!” and most of all “Stay out of the bathroom and stop wasting my stuff!”
You guys!! My little has ruined my SEPHORA makeup brush! Not only that!! She painted my lipliner, bath & body works lip glosses and everything else on my mirror! She has mixed my lotions, my bath & body works body washes (plural… more than one!) her body wash, her sprays for her hair, my hair products, everything she could get her hands on, it’s all been mixed in one big bucket with lots and lots of water…
I have tossed so many empty containers in the garbage this week, containers that were full or at least half full…
How many times have I asked and told her not to do it?
For the past 2 weeks, every single day, more than 20 times per day.
For the past 2 weeks, she has been getting punished every way possible to get it through her thick skull that what she’s doing is not acceptable. Has it worked? Nope.
I’ve tried talking to her, no TV, no coloring, taking the toy that is her favorite that day, popping her rear-end, etc. Nothing phases her. I’ve even tried those door knob covers – which she can get pulled off within 30 seconds. How long does it take me to get it off? Let’s not even go there…
So it’s safe to say, I’ve lost my shit more than I’d like to admit in the past 2 weeks. I’ve felt like I needed some wine to calm my nerves every night – (I haven’t had any, but I need it). Wine is a “weekend luxury”. Grab a bottle on Friday and sip on some glasses while I ‘porch-sit’ with my sweet thang and watch our little play, while praying that she will play her little heart out and actually let us watch a Friday night movie. Never happens that smoothly, but it’s nice to daydream.
These days, social media seems to make moms feel like you can’t lose your shit. Like… at all. We have to try to be just as good as that other mom who seems to have her life together. You know the one who only posts about how they feed their kids organic unprocessed foods. The ones with kids who actually eat their veggies. I’m going to be totally honest. I bet there’s no mom out there who hasn’t lost her shit more than she’d like to admit.
However, when you have a strong-willed kid, you’re bound to feel like you’re going crazy at some point. You will probably feel like this a lot. Just think, they’ll get older eventually and be even more hellacious. So pick your battles wisely and save your energy for the fights worth fighting. Like trying to keep them out of your expensive makeup…
So, to the mother of that strong-willed child. It’s okay that you are tired and at your wits end. It’s okay to lose your shit. Don’t listen to those who criticize your efforts. They just don’t know how hard it is to argue all day long with a mini version of yourself while trying to maintain and raise a happy healthy human.
To the moms who have kids who don’t test you on everything all day long, who have kids who listen when you say “no” by at least the 20th time, know that we envy you sometimes.
However, at the end of the day… (or 3 am when I finally get to go to sleep because she’s finally asleep and out of harm’s way), I wouldn’t trade my strong-willed child for anything in the world. She’s stubborn, but she knows what she wants. She wants to learn everything on her own, but she’s super smart and independent because of it. She doesn’t care what I think about her mismatched clothes, she has her own style & I’m learning to be okay with that. She’s full of spunk but she’s determined to try to grab life by the horns so to speak.
I’ll take losing my shit every now and then to watch this little ball of fire blossom into an outgoing & spunky bigger person.
Lose your shit moms. Go ahead. It’s okay, I won’t judge. I swear.
Cheers & Happy Saturday! (:
If you’re a mom who isn’t sure if you have a strong-willed child, then a good guess that you do is if you lose your shit almost every day arguing with your kid. But if you need to know more, I love PopSugars article Signs You Have a Strong-Willed Child.
Let’s share a laugh,
What is something you lost your shit over this week? Let’s try to laugh a little and drop your stories in the comments below!
